Wayne Wong 50 Years On.. A Classic Poster Reborn

Hotdog! Still up to his old tricks, the legendary Wayne Wong teamed up with sports eyewear company, VALLON to recreate his iconic ski poster 50 years on.

I dare you to find a passionate skier from the 70s who would not recognise the original, highly stylised poster of Wayne Wong doing his classic ‘hotdog’ move.

The image was first produced for the cover of Skiing Magazine in 1972, when Wayne Wong was named their ‘Freestyler of the Year’. It was back in the golden era of Ski Ballet, where skiers-come-acrobats-come-gymnasts coined a new form of creative, stylish (and incredibly graceful) skiing. ‘Ballet’, ‘Hotdog’, ‘Freestyle’ - all terms of a bygone era of classic skiing.

This new form of skiing was accompanied by some legendary outfits, including many rocking the classic, mirror-lensed Ski Aviator, and long tricolor ‘skinny skis’. Few things say retro chic like these outfits - and to this day - Wayne Wong is a fashion icon on the slopes; never seen without a fluorescent ski suit, and bold shades.

Inspired by skiing ‘the Wong way’, the team at VALLON reached out to Wayne Wong to ask whether, 50 years on, he would be interested in partnering with them to re-create this captivating shot; and co-produce a Special Edition Wayne Wong Ski Aviator (in classic white, of course).

Where most of his peers may have hung up their ski boots, a silver fox aged 71, Wayne’s raw energy, passion and technical prowess emanates from the image. Fearless, stylish and fun, he rocks a Nordic jumper, his new VALLON shades, and a huge smile.
